The Role of the Welfare officer
The Welfare Officer at Hazelwood Sports Club plays a vital role in ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for all members, particularly children, young people, and vulnerable adults. Drawing on the principles and guidance set out by the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), the Welfare Officer acts as the central point of contact for safeguarding concerns and promotes a culture where wellbeing is prioritised alongside participation and performance.
In line with LTA safeguarding standards, the Welfare Officer is responsible for implementing and maintaining robust safeguarding policies and procedures within the club. This includes ensuring that all coaches, volunteers, and staff understand their duty of care, complete appropriate training, and adhere to codes of conduct. The role also involves overseeing safer recruitment practices, including DBS checks where required, and maintaining accurate, confidential records.
A key aspect of the position is being approachable and visible to members, providing reassurance that any concerns will be listened to and taken seriously. The Welfare Officer works closely with club management, coaches, parents, and external agencies where necessary, ensuring that any safeguarding issues are handled promptly, sensitively, and in accordance with LTA reporting frameworks.
In addition to responding to concerns, the Welfare Officer actively promotes awareness of safeguarding and inclusion across the club. This includes supporting initiatives that encourage equality, diversity, and respect, ensuring that tennis remains accessible and enjoyable for everyone regardless of background or ability.
Ultimately, the Welfare Officer helps to embed a positive club culture where all members feel safe, valued, and able to thrive, reflecting the LTA’s commitment to safeguarding and the highest standards of care within the sport.
