Barn Dance – Saturday 28th June

See what you missed…

What Is a Barn Dance?

A barn dance is a lively, fun-filled social event featuring folk-style dancing to traditional music. Originally held in – you guessed it – barns, these gatherings bring people together for an evening of toe-tapping tunes, group dances, and good old-fashioned merriment.

The music at a barn dance is typically played live, often by a folk band using fiddles, accordions, banjos, guitars, and other acoustic instruments. A key feature of a barn dance is the caller – a person who guides the dancers through each step, so no prior dance experience is needed. Whether it’s a do-si-do, a promenade, or a swing-your-partner, the caller makes it easy (and fun) to join in.

Barn dances are social and inclusive – everyone is welcome, and partners often change from dance to dance. You don’t need to be a dancer to enjoy yourself; the atmosphere is relaxed, the pace is gentle, and the emphasis is on participation rather than perfection.

Whether held in a rustic barn, a village hall, or even outdoors under the stars, barn dances are a great way to enjoy music, movement, and a shared sense of community.
